Habitat for Humanity of Douglas County is a nonprofit, Christian housing ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty housing in the community and to make simple, decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. People from all walks of life work together in partnership to build homes with families in need. Since 1997, Habitat for Humanity of Douglas County has built or renovated 30 homes throughout Douglas County and has provided housing for 122 people.

Our Habitat homes are a hand-up to deserving families. Partner families are selected using established criteria including: a need for housing, the ability to partner, and the ability to pay. Our homes are not given away but sold to our partner families. Each family invests hundreds of hours of their own labor—sweat equity— into building their Habitat home and the homes of others. The homeowners’ sweat equity and no profit mortgage payments mean that dignity, pride and self-esteem are results of the partnership. Each homeowner is provided with support and a mentor to empower the homeowner to start a new life.

Our affiliate participates in the home for a home campaign. Habitat for Humanity of Douglas County donates 10 percent of its general contributions to help support the building of homes with families in need in Cambodia . Since 1997, our affiliate has served 36.5 international families with our tithe gifts.

We are planning to build four homes in 2012. The typical new home has 1,092 square feet of finished living space.

There are many ways to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity of Douglas County.
